How the Common Sense Trap steals your time. June 14, 2010 |
"What happened! We spoke about this. I thought you knew what to do," screamed Andrew. Their biggest customer was very upset at the way the problem was handled. Andrew had delegated to Stephen and at the time he was very proud of being able to delegate such an issue.
Stephen had not handled the situation the way Andrew would. Andrew was furious. "It's just common-sense!" Andrew shouted.
Your "common" sense is based on your own experiences, education, culture and environment. Your beliefs, knowledge and skills have been learned and developed over time. So my "common sense" and your "common sense" is different. Yet, we assume that other people think the same way we do!
The "common sense" trap is an example of miscommunication. You assume the other person has understood what you want, but they haven't.
It then costs you hours of time and lots of energy to fix the situation. Avoid the "common sense" trap by realizing your assumptions, then check your communication by getting your team member to summarize what they think they need to do.
The BENEFIT of recognizing the "common sense" trap is that you significantly improve your communication. Your team complete their tasks correctly the first time which saves you hours of fixing problems!
Have the time of your life this week.
