Is life-balance impossible??? November 25, 2009 |
Volume 75
Hi there to all our loyal and our new members. 201 new members joined in the last month. Welcome to the Time Creation community.
The majority of firms don't really want balanced employees.
Nigel Marsh wrote this in his fabulous book Overworked and Underlaid. When I read this I stopped and sat back in my chair while considering Nigel's point. "He's right" I said to myself. No-one wants to admit it but companies and many employees don't want balance.

Organizations (secretly) prefer employees who are 100% committed and prepared to work long and hard to achieve the company objectives. Senior managers would love their employees to have life balance AND be able to comfortably achieve the company goals, but if you cannot have both, the execs want you to work hard to reach the company targets.
Nigel also mentions that young, motivated employees with no children do not want balance. They want to work hard and get promoted. They don't want to take up the slack from a middle aged colleague who wants to spend time with their partner and kids (unless it means they can bypass them as they climb the corporate ladder.)
So, is work-life balance an impossible goal?
Actually, it is possible and many of my clients have achieved "balance".
It is very important to realize that your life-balance is your personal objective and not something that your company, your bosses or even all your colleagues want.
Here are some techniques that my clients (and Nigel Marsh) have found that help achieve some balance in your life.
What will you do to get balance in your life?

The reason I have to work so hard!!!
For a couple years I've been blaming it on lack of sleep and too much pressure from my job, but now I have found the real reason:
I'm tired because I'm overworked. The population of the USA is 237 million. 104 million are retired. That leaves 133 million to do the work. There are 85 million in school, which leaves 48 million to do the work. Of this there are 29 million employed by the federal government, leaving 19 million to do the work. 2.8 million are in the Armed Forces, which leaves 16.2 million to do the work.
Take from the total the 14,800,000 people who work for State and City Governments and that leaves 1.4 million to do the work. At any given time there are 188,000 people in hospitals, leaving 1,212,000 to do the work. Now, there are 1,211,998 people in prisons.
That leaves just two people to do the work. You and me.
Have some fun today :-) |
